Operations Announcement
Dear Learn to Read Students, Volunteers, Community Partners, and Financial Supporters,
The Board of Directors and Staff at Learn to Read Jacksonville regretfully inform you that the operations at Learn to Read were suspended as of Friday, November 6, 2009. Decreased grant funding and donor contributions as a result of the economic downturn have required that we close the doors of Learn to Read until further notice. As our financial situation changes, additional communication will be forthcoming.
Keep the faith, and thank you for your support.
Learn to Read Jacksonville
We provide:
- Adult Basic Education: Our “Jacksonville Reads” program is open to anyone 16 years of age and
older, not enrolled in a traditional school program. This program
offers many educational opportunities for adults with fourth grade or
below literacy abilities. Adults may meet with a volunteer tutor,
attend small groups, literacy classes and/or study in the computer lab.
Workbooks and supplemental materials are provided at no cost to active
students and tutors.
- English as a Second Language Instruction: This program is design for those students learning English as a second
language. Students attend continuous small groups sessions as well as
one-on-one training. These classes are available for adults at a
beginner and intermediate level. Classes incorporate cultural
awareness, life skills, health education and financial literacy in
addition to basic English literacy.
- Workplace Literacy Program: In 1995 Learn to Read Jacksonville expanded its services to the
workplace, providing an advancement class for Jacksonville Electric
Authority employees. Currently we partner with Mac Papers employees,
and other workplaces in our community for classes. This program offers
innovative instruction for traditional basic literacy skills, as well
as integrated instruction in critical thinking, problem solving, team
building and other skills necessary to function in the current
workplace and in the 21st century.
- Assessments and Educational Evaluations
- and much more!
About Learn to Read
Learn to Read Jacksonville is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving adult literacy in Duval County. Since 1969, Learn to Read Jacksonville has been serving adults in Northeast Florida who want to improve their reading skills or learn to read.
Learn to Read Jacksonville is an accredited member of ProLiteracy America, offering education and support to adults in basic reading and English as a second language.
Learn to Read Jacksonville (LTR) is a grassroots, 501(c)3 nonprofit

primarily on community funding.
Through this community support, we are able to offer tutoring services, free of charge, to over 500 students each year.
Did You Know?
One in five Duval County residents read at or below the sixth grade level. Reading is something that most of us take for granted. Glancing at a restaurant menu, reading the newspaper, reviewing a PTA newsletter, deciphering doctors order, applying for a job and so much more.
This probably sounds incredible to you that so many people in Jacksonville cannot read. But it is true, we see it every day. That is why we are here. Learn to Read makes a difference in the lives of individuals and families through education and life skills trainings. All of this would not be possible without the support of the community, volunteers and genrous donors.
We are making a difference.
