Becoming a Tutor

· Volunteer tutors are asked to commit to 1 year of service.

· Tutors must be at least 18 years of age, and possess the ability to read and speak English fluently. Tutor training is provided by Learn to Read trainers.  Completion of 12 hours of basic training and background check are required before being assigned a student.  No previous teaching experience is necessary.

· The tutor is matched with a student or a small group of students by a staff member, taking into account the needs, skills, goals and location of the student and tutor.  Time and overall availability are also considered.

· Tutors and students are asked to meet once a week for 1 to 2 hours at a minimum. Twice a week is preferred.

· The registration fee is $20 if you will be tutoring a LTR student; $50 if you will not be tutoring a LTR student.

· A staff member is available to answer any questions Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 399-8894 or via email at info@ltrjax.org.  We hold regular continuing  education training and provide opportunities for volunteers to attend local and state literacy conferences. LTR has both a lending library and extensive curriculum and materials for active volunteer tutors.
